Here are the descriptions of the legs of the race:
1st leg ("the Gun"): 4 miles, fast down hill, earliest wakeup.
2nd leg ("the Stretch"): 5.8 mile undulating.
3rd leg ("the Hill"): 6.9 mile: 2 mile climb, rolling thereafter. (Also features
the famous bridges and the guy in the tux playing piano).
4th leg ("the Home Stretch"): 6.2 mile, rolling terrain.
5th leg ("the Tape"): 3.3 mile, Fast short hills (also features the
bagpipe corps, finish line crowd.)
Note: the 1998 marathon and relay used a different course due to
El Nino mudslide destruction on major parts of the Highway 1 course.
